At the Annual General Meeting held on Sunday 8th February there was a slight reshuffle on the band committee with Chris Rimmer joining the committee as Secretary, Ben Meyer being elected Captain and Ben Kipling being elected Vice Captain.
Our thanks go to Paul Caruana, the outgoing Secretary, for the huge amount of work he has done over the past few years whilst serving as Treasurer then Secretary.
Looking back on the past year Taken from Paul Caruana’s report at the AGM
It was another busy year in 2015 for the St. Martin in the Fields Band. Two quarter peals were rung by the band in 2015 and a special length of 1945 changes was also rung on the back eight to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of VE Day.
There was also special quarter peal arranged in July which was rung in the morning for the Memorial Service of Geoffrey Brown who was the Vicar of St. Martin’s between 1985 and 1995. He was the vicar at the time that the current bells were installed.
We were also pleased to be involved with the VJ Day Service in August where HM The Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh as well as other members of the Royal Family and distinguished guests were in attendance. The bells were in fact given a special mention in the BBC coverage of the event.
Two peals were rung during the year, the first by the Society of Royal Cumberland Youths and the second was a peal of 5040 Elizabeth R Surprise Royal, rung to celebrate HM The Queen becoming the longest reigning monarch. This was Ben Meyer’s first peal as conductor and a first in the method for the entire band!
Our annual dinner was held in July in the Punch Tavern on Fleet Street. It was the second year in a row that we had been to this venue and we were lucky enough to have the entire back room to ourselves again.
There were several visiting bands during the year, of which two of note stood out. The first being a Young Ringers’ Outing with which Ben Meyer was involved and the second was a Devon Call-Change band. It was nice to hear the bells rung so metronomically!
The ringing chamber was open to the public as usual for the Saturday Open House weekend Thanks to all were able to assist with this and particularly to Edmund for running it.
Advent is always a busy part of the Church calendar and we were pleased to ring for the Advent Carols, Nine Lessons and Carols, Community Carol Service, between the Parish Carols services and the annual Knifecrime Service. Thanks to all involved.
